Last year we presented Starfish’s winter 2011 collection – SEVEN SISTERS – at New Zealand Fashion Week. This was an exciting occasion for us because not only did Starfish open the event, we also showcased the first ever full eco-show at NZFW.
SEVEN SISTERS features a wide range of eco-conscious fabrics, New Zealand sourced where possible, natural treatment processes for textiles, and re- and up-cycled materials. In addition, every garment has been made onshore in New Zealand. During the show we also used beautiful natural make-up from our heros The Body Shop and hair products from Dharma.
Laurie states that “Going out first this year said a lot about where fashion in New Zealand is headed. We need to push beyond throwaway fashion and consider more deeply about how clothes are being made. The future of fashion has to be stylish clothes produced in an ethical way.
When we started we up-cycled material from vintage clothing into new designs. Over the years this has evolved and now we’re focusing on using fabrics, dyeing and treatment processes that have a far lower environmental impact than the conventional alternatives. We also continue to produce all of our clothing in New Zealand, and source as many local fabrics as we can.”
The collection features garments made from bamboo, hemp, organic cotton, merino and denim, and silk. Our stores also have a great variety of accessories that are eco-conscious, including clogs made from recycled New Zealand rimu, hats made in New Zealand and underwear made from organic cotton.
We’d also like to say a special thanks to our partners for doing their bit to reduce their impact on the environment – The Body Shop, B.E.E., PowerShop, Dharma and Good magazine.

It’s been a long time coming but at last we have our very own store in Auckland.
Laurie reckons that ”unveiling the Auckland store feels better than Christmas. The Auckland project has been my baby for sometime now and seeing it come to fruition makes me feel like a proud mother”.
Many of our clothes are made in Auckland and it will be great to strengthen our relationship with the city. We’ve also been wanting to offer Auckland the full Starfish experience for a while now – including all of the other fantastic brands we carry including: Terra Plana shoes, Nancybird handbags, Kowtow (women’s tees), Keep Cups, Veja shoes and Moki clogs.
Planning the store opening hasn’t been without hiccups. The store fittings were being constructed in Christchurch, which after the earthquake has had set backs. However, Troy from Aridium Design has been an absolute star, and dispite half of his house falling away battled on to complete the job – and it looks fantastic!
So make sure you come and visit us – we look forward to seeing you.

The Spring Collections is a ‘not to be missed’ fashion event which will showcase some of the South Islands top retailers and designers including yours truly – STARFISH.
We’re really excited about this event because not only does it give us the opportunity to show off our fantastic summer collection ‘Free Radicals’ on the catwalk, but because the event also supports the NEW ZEALAND BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION – a charity very close to our hearts.
